Jagadish Chandra Bhattacharyya, known as J.C. Bhattacharyya (1 September 1930 – 4 June 2012), was an Indian professor who specialized in experimental astrophysics. He served as director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics starting in 1982. In 1971, using a ground-based telescope at Kavalur, Tamil Nadu, he discovered a thin atmosphere around Ganymede, one of Jupiter’s moons. In 1977, he found an extended ring system around Uranus using a lunar occultation technique, a discovery later confirmed by the Voyager mission.
