Jānis Peive

Jānis Peive (1906–1976) was a Latvian agrochemist and communist politician. He studied at the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy. Peive served as Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Latvian SSR, effectively Latvia’s head of government, from 1959 to 1962. He also chaired the Soviet of Nationalities, the upper chamber of the Soviet Parliament, from 1958 to 1966. He was awarded the title Hero of Socialist Labour. Born in the Russian Empire, Peive died in Moscow in 1976 at age 70.
