Islam is the main religion in Western Sahara, with Muslims making up almost all of the population. A notable person from the region is Adnan Abu Walid al-Sahrawi (1973–2021), a Sahrawi Islamist militant who helped found the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) and was the first Emir of the Islamic State – Sahel Province.
