Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development
The Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development, known as Balitbangtan, was a unit of the Ministry of Agriculture responsible for state research, development, and innovation in Indonesian agriculture. It was established on 26 August 1974 by Presidential Decision No. 45/1974, bringing together 11 research and development agencies.
Balitbangtan operated a large network of agricultural research institutes, laboratories, and facilities across the country. In 2021–2022, the government discussed liquidating Balitbangtan and merging it into the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). In March 2022, Balitbangtan’s research arms were moved to BRIN as the Research Organization for Agriculture and Food. On 21 September 2022, Balitbangtan was formally dissolved by Presidential Decree No. 117/2022. A new agency, the Agricultural Instrumentation Standardization Agency (BSIP), was created within the Ministry of Agriculture to handle agricultural standards and regulation.
