Ibn al-Imad al-Hanbali (1622/1623–1679) was a Syrian Sunni Muslim historian and a jurist from the Hanbali school. He was born in Damascus and spent many years in Cairo studying with leading scholars, before returning to Damascus to teach. His notable students included Muhammad ibn Fadlallah al-Muhibbi and Mustafa al-Hamawi. He died in Mecca while on the pilgrimage. He is best known for Shadharāt al-dhahab fī akhbār man dhahab (Fragments of Gold in the Accounts of Those Who Have Departed), a long biographical dictionary completed in 1670 that covers the first ten centuries of Islamic history and provides detailed obituaries of notable figures.
