ITC Sangeet Research Academy
ITC Sangeet Research Academy (ITCSRA) is a Hindustani classical music academy run by ITC Ltd. It is in Kolkata, India, and focuses on education, research, and preservation of Hindustani classical music.
Many renowned musicians are associated with the academy, including Ulhas Kashalkar, Ajoy Chakrabarty, Subhra Guha, Uday Bhawalkar, Brajeswar Mukherjee, Omkar Dadarkar, and Abir Hossain. Notable alumni include Rashid Khan and Kaushiki Chakraborty.
History: ITC’s connection with Indian classical music began with the ITC Sangeet Sammelan in Delhi in 1971, which inspired ITC to support Indian classical music. This led to the formation of the Sangeet Research Academy in 1977, with a goal to create a modern gurukul and to continue the Guru-Shishya Parampara (teacher-student tradition).
The founding faculty came from major gharanas: Nissar Hussain Khan (Sahaswan), Hirabai Barodekar (Kirana), Ishtiaq Hussain Khan (Rampur), Nivrittibua Sarnaik (Atrauli-Jaipur), Girija Devi (Benaras), and Latafat Hussain Khan (Agra).
In 2002, instrumental training was added, led by Buddhadev Dasgupta, who served for a long time on the academy’s expert committee. Today, ITCSRA operates as a public charitable trust governed by a board of trustees. Its aims are to create an effective training system, modernize traditional knowledge through research, and preserve music.
Activities: ITCSRA runs the annual ITC Sangeet Sammelan, a major classical music festival, and also the ITC SRA Mini Sangeet Sammelan across India.
Location: 1, Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Road, Tollygunge, Kolkata - 700 040.
