Hyrcanus inscription
Hyrcanus inscription: A fragment of a chalk (limestone) bowl from the Hasmonean period inscribed with the name Hyrcanus in Hebrew letters. It dates to around 100 BCE. The fragment was discovered in 2015 at the City of David, Giv’ati Parking Lot, Jerusalem, and is now held by the Israel Antiquities Authority. Chalk bowls were common among Jews because they resist ritual impurity. The name Hyrcanus was widespread at the time, with notable figures such as John Hyrcanus and John Hyrcanus II. The find belongs to Second Temple Judaism during the Hasmonean era.
