Hudspeth County sits in far West Texas along the Mexican border. The county seat is Sierra Blanca, and the largest community is Fort Hancock. It covers about 4,572 square miles, making it one of Texas’ largest counties by land area.

Population and location
The county is very rural, with about 3,200 residents in 2020. It lies in the Mountain Time Zone and fully observes daylight saving time, along with nearby El Paso County.

What’s nearby
Hudspeth is part of the Trans-Pecos region and includes a portion of Guadalupe Mountains National Park in the northeast corner of the county.

History at a glance
- Long before Europeans arrived, the Jornada Mogollón people farmed along the Rio Grande in this area (900–1350 AD).
- In the 1800s, explorers and soldiers charted routes and built forts to protect travelers.
- The Butterfield Overland Mail operated here from 1857 to 1861.
- Hudspeth County was created in 1917 from El Paso County, with Sierra Blanca as the county seat.

Hudspeth County has four school districts:

Allamoore ISD merged into Culberson County ISD in 1995. All county residents are in the service area of El Paso Community College.
