Horden shooting

On 1 January 2012, in Horden, England, Michael Atherton killed his partner Susan McGoldrick, her sister Alison Turnbull, and her daughter Tanya Turnbull with a shotgun before killing himself. Four people died in total, and one person was injured; three others escaped from an upstairs window.

Atherton, a taxi driver, legally owned firearms and had six guns, including three shotguns. Police had taken his guns away in 2008, but they were later returned. He had been arrested for affray at a local club, and months before the shooting armed police went to his home after he threatened to blow his head off to his family.
