Honky Tonk Angels
Honky Tonk Angels is a 1993 country studio album by Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, and Tammy Wynette, released on November 2 by Columbia Records. Recorded in Nashville in February 1993, it was produced by Steve Buckingham and Parton. The 33-minute record features a mix of classic country songs and new material, including It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels with guest Kitty Wells, Wings of a Dove, I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know, Put It Off Until Tomorrow, Lovesick Blues (featuring a vintage Patsy Cline recording), and I Dreamed of a Hillbilly Heaven with new spoken dialogue written by Parton. Original songs by Lynn and Wynette are solo performances with harmony from Parton, while Sittin' on the Front Porch Swing is Parton's solo.
The only single, Silver Threads and Golden Needles, was released in November 1993. The album was certified Gold by the RIAA in January 1994 for 500,000 copies sold. It reached No. 6 on the US Billboard Top Country Albums chart and No. 42 on the Billboard 200; in Canada it peaked at No. 6 on the RPM Country Albums chart and No. 44 on the RPM Albums chart.
Critics gave it mixed to positive reviews, calling it a spirited, nostalgic collaboration and praising the trio’s traditional-country sound. The album and its single earned several nominations, including a Grammy nomination for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals and a CMA nomination for Vocal Event, as well as nominations at the 1994 TNN Music City News Country Awards. The project is remembered as a notable collaboration among three country icons who helped expand the audience for country music.
