Hindman, Kentucky
Hindman is a small town in Knott County, Kentucky, and the county seat. It sits in the Troublesome Creek valley at the crossroads of Kentucky Routes 160, 550, and 80. The town covers about 3 square miles of land and had 701 residents in 2020.
Incorporated in 1886, Hindman was named after James Hindman, the lieutenant governor when Knott County was created. Early on, the area saw conflicts between settlers, but education became important with the founding of the Hindman Settlement School in 1902. The school faced three fires in its first decade but was rebuilt and continued to serve students. Hindman also had a pack horse library starting in 1935.
In July 2022, historic floods struck Eastern Kentucky, and Hindman was one of the communities hardest hit, with significant damage and loss of life in the county.
Today, Hindman has the Knott County Public Library and hosts the Gingerbread Festival, a three-day event in early September to celebrate the community and Appalachian culture. The ZIP code is 41822 and the area code is 606.
