Heroes of Shadow is a 160-page supplement for Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition, published by Wizards of the Coast on April 19, 2011. It’s designed to work with both the Essentials line and the base game and focuses on shadow-themed options for players—including new classes, new races, and other ways to play heroes who draw power from the Shadowfell and often walk morally gray lines.

The book introduces three playable races: revenant (a revived being), shade (a dark, shadow-touched humanoid), and vryloka (a living vampire lineage). It also adds new character options, including an official assassin class and an anti-paladin-like option called the blackguard. The idea is to offer darker, heroic character concepts rather than pure villains.

Heroes of Shadow was developed by Mike Mearls, Claudio Pozas, and Robert J. Schwalb. Jon Schindehette, the Senior Creative Art Director, described the focus as on darker heroes who use the power of shadows, not necessarily evil villains.

At the time, the Essentials line was winding down, and Heroes of Shadow marked a shift back toward the traditional hardcover 4e format. The book helped set the stage for later Shadowfell-related releases, such as The Shadowfell: Gloomwrought and Beyond. In 2015, Heroes of Shadow was also released as a PDF.

Reception notes highlighted some confusion over whether the book was part of the Essentials line, since its design leaned toward Essentials-styled content even without the cover signaling Essentials. The vampire-class element was especially controversial, chosen to capture the vampire feel while allowing players to mix with other races. Overall, the book signaled a direction in 4e for how dark, shadowy hero concepts could be designed.
