Henry Hamilton (Irish politician)
The Honourable Henry Hamilton (1692–1743) was an Irish politician who sat in two Irish parliaments. He was born in February 1692, the youngest son of Gustavus Hamilton and Elizabeth Brooke. His father later became Baron Stackallan and then Viscount Boyne.
In 1715, Henry was elected as one of the two MPs for St Johnstown Borough in the Parliament of King George I, and he served from 1715 to 1727. He married Mary Dawson in 1722, and they had five sons and two daughters. Their sons included Sackville, who became under-secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and Henry, who was governor of Bermuda and Dominica.
Henry did not stand for Parliament in 1727, but in 1730 he won a by-election for one of County Donegal’s two seats, after the death of Alexander Montgomery. He represented Donegal until his death in 1743, when Andrew Knox took the seat. His father and his brothers Frederick and Gustavus had also represented Donegal in Parliament. Henry also served as Collector of the Port of Cork. He died on 3 June 1743.
