Omoku
Omoku, nicknamed Oil City, is a town in Rivers State, Nigeria. It lies in the northern part of the state near the borders with Delta and Imo states. About 320,000 people live there. Omoku is the headquarters of the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area and a major center for the Ogba people, who speak an Igboid language. It is also the capital area of the Oba of Ogba land and hosts the Federal College of Education (Technical).
Economy and infrastructure:
Oil companies operate in Omoku, including Shell, Total, and Nigerian Agip. The town has improved infrastructure with dual carriageway roads, a power generation plant, and banks.
Education and culture:
Omoku offers primary, secondary, and tertiary education. There are several cultural festivals, including Nchaka (late November or early December) and Okuroso, the masquerade festival (January–February). Other celebrations include Igba-Ogwe, Ebiam, Egwi-Iji Onube, and Egwu-Ohali.
Sports:
Go Round F.C., based in Omoku, has played in the Nigeria Premier League since 2018. Home games are at Krisdera Hotel Stadium. The club is owned by Felix A. Obuah and coached by Ngozi Elechi.
Notable people and community:
The Ogba people are known for fishing and farming, and many are Seventh-day Adventists. Notable figures from Omoku include Prof. Claude Ake, who championed environmental justice for the Niger Delta, and Prof. Blessing Esuru Ahiauzu, a Rivers State University librarian and advocate for the Ogba language; she is also the mother of musician Ric Hassani.
Climate:
Omoku has a warm, year-round climate with a wet season and a hot, cloudy dry season. Average temperatures range from about 69°F to 88°F (21–31°C), rarely dropping below 61°F (16°C) or rising above 91°F (33°C).
