Harrison Township in Hudson County, New Jersey, was created by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 13, 1840. It came from the southern part of Lodi Township as Hudson County itself had been created from portions of Bergen County on February 22, 1840. The township’s borders ran along Paterson Plank Road to the north, the Hackensack River to the east, and the Passaic River to the west and along the southern boundary where it met the Hackensack.

In 1852, residents in the northern part of Harrison Township decided to return to Bergen County, and Union Township was created from Harrison Township on February 19, 1852. Union Township’s northern boundary was Paterson Plank Road, its southern boundary was the Belleville Turnpike, and it shared the same east-west boundaries as Harrison.

From 1852 to 1867, Harrison Township’s boundaries matched the 1671 limits of the colonial William Sandford plantation.

Kearny Township was formed from parts of Harrison on April 8, 1867. The remaining portion of Harrison was reincorporated as the Town of Harrison, New Jersey, on March 25, 1869.
