Webb City, Missouri minor league baseball history
Minor league baseball was played in Webb City, Missouri in several separate stretches between 1887 and 1912. The teams used different names over the years, including the Webb City Stars (1887), Webb City (1891), Webb City Goldbugs (1903 and 1905–1907), Webb City Webbfeet (1908–1909), and Webb City again in 1912. All home games were at Sunset Park, on West Broadway in Webb City.
The clubs competed in a series of changing leagues. In 1887 they were in the Southwestern League; in 1891 they played in the Southwestern Missouri League. In 1903 a Nevada, Missouri team moved to Webb City and became the Webb City Goldbugs, but they folded after four games. In 1905 Webb City played in the Missouri Valley League, which later became the Western Association, where Webb City stayed from 1906 through 1909. In 1912 Webb City joined the Missouri-Kansas League as an independent team.
Notable moments include a no-hitter pitched by Fred Burnham for the Webbfeet on August 21, 1908, against the Hutchinson Salt Packers. In 1909 the Webb City team moved mid-season to Sapulpa, Oklahoma and became the Sapulpa Oilers, finishing fifth in the Western Association. In 1914 Webb City joined with Joplin for the Joplin-Webb City Miners in the Western Association, but the franchise moved to Guthrie, Oklahoma, later that season. Webb City has not hosted another minor league team since. Sunset Park remained the ballpark for all Webb City’s minor league years.
