Spaarnwoude
Spaarnwoude is a small village in North Holland, Netherlands. It is part of the municipality of Haarlemmermeer and lies about 5 km northeast of Haarlem. The name was first recorded in the 11th century as Spirnerewalt and means "forest along the Spaarne river." The village covers about 0.76 square kilometers and sits about 0.5 meters below sea level. In 2021 it had about 100 residents.
The former Dutch Reformed church in Spaarnwoude dates from 1764 and has a tower from the 13th century. It was taken out of service for worship in 1880 but is still used for cultural activities.
North of the village is the Spaarnwoude recreation area, which lies across the municipalities of Velsen and Haarlemmermeer. The Haarlem Spaarnwoude railway station is southwest of the village. An IKEA store is nearby to the north, and to the east is the Veerplas lake.
Historically, Spaarnwoude was its own municipality until 1857, when it merged with Haarlemmerliede. That area later became part of Haarlemmermeer in 2019.
