Hardscrabble Peak is a mountain in Gallatin County, Montana, in the United States. It stands 9,571 feet (2,917 meters) tall and is the fourth-highest peak in the Bridger Range, a subrange of the Rocky Mountains. The peak is about 16 miles north of Bozeman and lies within the Gallatin National Forest. Water from the east side flows into Fairy Creek, Flathead Creek, the Shields River, and eventually the Yellowstone River, while water from the west side drains into tributaries of the East Gallatin River. The summit rises about 2,000 feet (610 meters) above Fairy Lake in roughly 1.25 miles (2.01 kilometers), making the climb fairly steep. The name “Hardscrabble” refers to rocky, poor-quality land, and it is an officially recognized place name. The area has an alpine subarctic climate with long, cold winters and cool to warm summers; winter temperatures can drop below 0°F, with wind chills well below −10°F. Precipitation occurs year-round, as snow in winter and thunderstorms in summer.
