Chamta
Chamta is a village in the Tufanganj I community development block, Tufanganj subdivision, in the Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, India. It sits at about 26.31°N, 89.65°E.
As of the 2011 census, Chamta had 8,190 residents: 4,240 men and 3,950 women, with 885 children aged 0–6. The literacy rate was 75.7% for people over 6 years old (5,529 literate).
There is a small temple with a char-chala tin roof dedicated to Devi Ghurneswari, a form of Kali. A trishula representing Bhairava is also worshipped. The temple attracts many devotees during festivals. Local legend says a cow or buffalo used to bring milk to a stone under a banyan tree, a story that reached Maharaja Harendra Narayan of the Cooch Behar state; he had a temple built, though the present temple is a later construction.
Chamta lies in a flat, fertile flood plain and is mainly a rural area, with most people living outside of towns.
