HSS Hire
HSS Hire Group plc is a UK and Ireland tool and equipment rental company, operating as HSS Hire. It runs hundreds of hire outlets and serves customers from DIY users to large construction firms. The company was founded in 1957 by Bert Taylor in Kensington, London as The Hire Service Company and later became HSS Hire after a merge with Hire Shops Limited.
Over the years it changed hands several times, including ownership by Davis Services Group (1993), 3i (2003), and later Aurigo and Och-Ziff (2007). It expanded by acquiring ABIRD (diesel generators) in 2012 and Apex Generators in 2014, and it floated on the London Stock Exchange in February 2015. After the float, the business faced profit warnings and its market value fell significantly by 2017. In May 2015 it bought All Seasons Hire.
HSS Hire has safety and quality certifications, including ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, Safe Hire, and Investors in People. It works with ROSPA and the Health & Safety Executive and runs community youth training programs.
In October 2025, HSS sold its physical rental operations, including 130 depots, to Endless for £1 to focus on its ProService digital marketplace. It sold a 10% stake in ProService to Speedy Hire, which will acquire a number of HSS depots and transfer about 300 employees. The HSS Hire Group will be renamed ProService Building Services Marketplace.
Financials: in 2023, revenue was £349 million and net income £12 million.
