HMS Peterel (1899) – short, easy-to-understand version

HMS Peterel was a Spiteful-class destroyer in the Royal Navy. Built by Palmers at Jarrow, she served in home waters during World War I and was sold for scrap in 1919.

Design and construction
- Type: Spiteful-class destroyer
- Builder: Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Company, Jarrow
- Laid down: 29 July 1898 (yard number 745)
- Launched: 30 March 1899

- Size: about 210–220 feet long, beam about 20 feet 9 inches, displacing roughly 370–420 tons
- Appearance: four funnels
- Propulsion: Reed water-tube boilers and triple-expansion steam engines, around 6,200 indicated horsepower, two propeller shafts
- Speed: about 30 knots (about 35 mph)
- Armament: 1 x QF 12-pounder gun on the conning-tower platform (also used as a bridge), 5 x 6-pounder guns, and 2 x 18-inch torpedo tubes
- Coal capacity: around 91 tons

Service history
- February 1900: Delivered to Portsmouth for completion and armament
- July 1900: Commissioned and ready for service
- 1901: Took part in Naval Manoeuvres and helped escort royal transport duties as part of early fleet duties
- 1904: Commissioned for trials against her sister ship Spiteful, which had been fitted to use oil fuel
- 1910–1912: Member of the 4th Destroyer Flotilla based at Portsmouth; later reclassified as a B-class destroyer (30 knots)
- 1912–1914: Assigned to patrol flotillas; moved between the 6th Flotilla at Portsmouth and the 8th Flotilla at Devonport
- World War I:
- August 1914: 8th Flotilla deployed to the Firth of Forth to support the Grand Fleet
- 1917: Reclassified as a Local Defence Flotilla
- July 1917: Transferred to the East Coast Convoy Flotilla
- August 1917: Moved to the 7th Destroyer Flotilla to continue convoy escort duties on the East Coast
- Rest of the war: Remained with the 7th Flotilla
- February 1919: Left the 7th Flotilla and was listed at The Nore
- August 30, 1919: Sold for scrap
