Gunman's Walk
Gunman's Walk is a 1958 American Western film directed by Phil Karlson. It stars Van Heflin as Lee Hackett and Tab Hunter as his hot-tempered son Ed, with James Darren as the younger brother Davy and Kathryn Grant as Cecily “Clee” Chouard.
The story follows a ranching family during a horse roundup. Ed clashes with Paul, a talented foreman, and tries to capture a prize white mare. In a dangerous chase, Ed pushes Paul to his death and is arrested. A man named Sieverts lies to help Ed get released, and Lee learns that Davy loves Clee, causing a rift in the family. Sieverts later takes the white mare, and Ed shoots him to keep the mare. Ed is jailed again after shooting a deputy and then escapes. Lee tracks him down, and in a final confrontation he shoots and kills his own son. Lee returns to town with Ed’s body and asks Davy and Clee to help bring it back to the ranch.
The screenplay was written by Frank S. Nugent from a story by Ric Hardman. Production occurred at Columbia Pictures, with filming beginning in November 1957. Gunman’s Walk was released in July 1958, running 95 minutes and filmed in Technicolor with CinemaScope. The cast also includes Bert Convy as Paul and Ray Teal as Sieverts.
