Guinea-Bissau–Turkey relations
Guinea-Bissau–Turkey relations are the diplomatic ties between the two countries. Turkey has an embassy in Bissau, and Guinea-Bissau has an embassy in Ankara. Turkey has helped Guinea-Bissau improve its education system, which was weakened by Portuguese colonial policies. The Portuguese “civilizing mission” aimed to teach basic literacy but not to train professionals, a view noted by Cardinal Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira in 1960. Through the Turkish aid agency TIKA, Turkey funded and built schools that went beyond the small, early schools left by the Portuguese.
