Port Reading Refinery
Port Reading Refinery, also known as Hess Refinery, was an oil refinery located in Perth Amboy and Port Reading, New Jersey. Built by Hess Oil under Leon Hess and starting up in 1958, it was a relatively simple refinery that processed heavy sour crude and refined products from other refineries. The refinery was owned by Hess Corporation, the maker of Hess brand gasoline. It connected to the Arthur Kill waterway, allowing oil barges to reach the site. A neon red “HESS” sign on its cracking unit was removed in December 2013 after the property was sold. The refinery closed in February 2013.
