Guardians of the Galaxy (soundtrack)
Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the film’s soundtrack, featuring the songs Peter Quill listens to on his mixtape in the movie. It was released on July 29, 2014, by Hollywood Records and runs 44 minutes and 34 seconds. A separate film score album, Guardians of the Galaxy (Original Score), was released on the same day, composed by Tyler Bates. A deluxe version includes both albums.
The soundtrack was a huge hit. It reached number 1 on the US Billboard 200, becoming the first album made up entirely of previously released songs to top that chart. It also led the Billboard Top Soundtracks chart for 11 weeks (16 weeks in total). By April 2017, US sales were about 1.75 million copies, and by January 2023 it was certified 3× Platinum by the RIAA. It was the US’s second best-selling soundtrack of 2014, behind Frozen. An exclusive vinyl edition came out on September 16, 2014 and sold about 367,000 copies by 2019, making it one of the decade’s best-selling vinyl albums. A limited cassette release was issued for Record Store Day Black Friday in November 2014.
Director James Gunn confirmed in 2013 that Tyler Bates would compose the film’s score, and Bates began writing music before filming so scenes could be shot to the music. The movie uses many 1960s and 1970s songs, such as “Hooked on a Feeling,” to reflect Earth and Quill’s memories. Most songs on the soundtrack appear in the film, though a few songs considered for the movie were not used. Some tracks later appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s soundtrack.
The album topped the Billboard 200 in August 2014, and by September it was the second-best-selling soundtrack in the US with 426,000 copies sold that month. It was the fifth-best-selling album of 2014 with 898,000 copies that year. The soundtrack was quickly certified Gold and went on to sell over 2.5 million copies worldwide in 2014. It has since been certified 3× Platinum in the US. All music on the score album was composed by Tyler Bates.
