Cliffs of the Neuse State Park is a North Carolina state park in Wayne County near Seven Springs. It covers about 1,100 acres along the southern bank of the Neuse River. The park offers a swimming area, campsites, hiking trails, fishing spots, and picnic areas. Its museum has exhibits about the cliffs and the park’s natural history.

The cliffs extend about 600 yards and rise roughly 90 feet above the river. The cliff face shows layers of sand, clay, seashells, shale, and gravel in colors like white, tan, yellow, and brown. The cliffs formed when a fault in the Earth’s crust moved long ago. The Neuse River followed this fault and cut through the ancient seabed, carving the cliffs over time.

Long ago, the area around the Neuse was home to the Tuscarora and Saponi tribes. The land now in the park was once a ceremonial ground and a gathering place for hunting. The river helped people travel through the surrounding wilderness.

In 1944, Lionel Weil proposed preserving the cliffs area as a state park. The park was created in 1945 when Weil and others donated land on the south side of the river. About 200 more acres were added to the east of the river. Over the years, additional purchases and donations increased the park to roughly 1,100 acres.

The park has a variety of habitats, including riverbanks, flood plains, uplands, and ravines, which support many plants—more than 420 species have been recorded. Wildlife includes opossums, raccoons, foxes, squirrels, river otters, and muskrats. Reptiles and amphibians are common, with most snakes nonvenomous (copperheads are present). White-tailed deer and small nocturnal rodents live here, and occasional black bears and coyotes have been seen.

Birds are plentiful in every season. The northern parula nests among Spanish moss, and the prothonotary warbler lives along the river. In fall and winter, migratory waterfowl visit, joining the native wood duck.
