Grand Ole Opry (1940 film)

Grand Ole Opry is a 1940 American comedy directed by Frank McDonald, with a screenplay by Dorrell McGowan and Stuart E. McGowan. It stars the vaudeville team the Weaver Brothers and Elviry, along with Lois Ranson, Allan Lane, and Henry Kolker. Produced and released by Republic Pictures, the film came out on June 25, 1940, and runs 67 minutes.

The movie doesn’t take place at the Grand Ole Opry building; the connection is that several Opry regulars appear. The story starts when a governor dies in a duck-hunting accident. A campaign to elect a new governor focuses on a proposed Farmer’s Bill. Campaign speeches and songs are broadcast on the XYZ radio station, and the candidates are continually interrupted by singing. The Weaver Brothers use Grand Ole Opry-style music for the campaign, creating a light, musical comedy.
