Giovanni Battista Pioda II
Giovanni Battista Pioda II (April 24, 1850 – November 30, 1914) was a Swiss diplomat. He is sometimes called Giovan Battista Pioda or Jean Baptiste Pioda.
He was born in Lugano, Switzerland. His father, Giovanni Battista Pioda Sr., was a state attorney, diplomat and member of the Swiss Federal Council; his mother was Anna (née Sozzi). He had brothers Carlo Eugenio Pioda and Gioachimo Pioda. He studied law in Switzerland and Italy and earned a licentiate in Rome in 1880.
Pioda was one of Switzerland’s first professional diplomats. He served as Switzerland’s ambassador to the United States in Washington, D.C., from 1894 to 1902. He then served as Switzerland’s ambassador to Italy from 1902 until his death in 1914. He was married to Maria Federici. He died on November 30, 1914, in Anzio, Kingdom of Italy (now Italy), at the age of 64.
