Gilbert & Bennett
Gilbert & Bennett (officially Gilbert & Bennett Manufacturing Company) was a wire mill in Georgetown, part of Redding, Connecticut. The company began in the early 1800s, founded by Benjamin Gilbert and Sturges Bennett. It grew for a time but struggled as American industry declined, filing for bankruptcy in 1998 and closing in 2001. In 2002 the Town of Redding partnered with the Georgetown Land Development Company to redevelop the 55-acre site, but that company later went bankrupt and the town reclaimed the property. As of 2023, environmental surveys are still needed before the site can be reused for housing or mixed-use development.
