George Moe
George Cecil Rawle Moe CHB (12 March 1932 – 16 August 2004) was a Barbadian judge and politician. Born in Barbados to Cecil and Odessa Moe, he studied at Harrison College, Oxford University, and Columbia University in New York, where he earned an LL.M. He trained as a barrister at the Middle Temple in London. Moe began his legal career in Barbados, serving as a Magistrate, Acting Assistant Legal Draughtsman, Crown Counsel and Senior Crown Counsel in the Attorney General's Chambers. In the early 1970s he was Barbados’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations. From 1971 to 1976 he was Attorney General, Minister of Legal Affairs, and Minister of External Affairs under Prime Minister Errol Barrow. He later moved to Belize to become Chief Justice from 1982 to 1985, the second Barbadian to hold that post. In 1985 he joined the Court of Appeal of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court and served there until his retirement in 1991. He married Olga Louise Atkinson, and they had two sons and a daughter. He was named Companion of Honour of Barbados in 1992. Moe died in Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown at the age of 72 after a lengthy illness and had a state funeral at Christ Church Parish Church. He was survived by his wife and his children Stephen and Lucille.
