George Gibbs (rugby union)

George Gibbs (George Anthony Gibbs) was an English rugby union player who played as a prop. He was born on 31 March 1920 in Carrera, Italy, and died on 26 February 2001 in Bristol, England. He attended Clifton College from 1929 to 1938, earning colours in five sports and serving as captain of the first rugby XV for a season.

During World War II, Gibbs served in the 44th Royal Tank Regiment, seeing action in India and Burma and was mentioned in dispatches. After the war, he played club rugby for Bristol United and Imperial, before establishing himself with Bristol Football Club in 1947. He won two England caps, appearing in home Five Nations matches against France in 1947 and Ireland in 1948. His brother Nigel Gibbs also played for England as a fullback. Gibbs was also a capable cricketer, playing for Gloucestershire’s Second XI.
