Chittumala Chira
Chittumala Chira, also known as Chittumala Lake, is a freshwater wetland in the Chittumala area of Kollam district. It provides drinking water for people in Perayam, Pavithreswaram, and East Kallada. The lake covers about 55 hectares. Until 1988, locals practiced Punchakrishi, a traditional farming method, in the nearby area called Chira. Nearby lakes include Sasthamkotta Lake and Cherupola Lake. Recently, water was taken from Kundara for industrial use, which drained the aquifer. To protect the water, the Kollam Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s Court banned water extraction for ceramics in April and May, and the ban remains in place.
