Geology of Anguilla (short version)

Anguilla is part of the Lesser Antilles island arc. The island’s rocks are mainly volcanic, formed by arc volcanism. These volcanic rocks are overlain by reef limestone that formed during the Oligocene, Miocene, and Pliocene epochs.

Older rocks, such as tuff and basalt, are found only in two places on the island, and those outcrops are tilted.

During the Pliocene and Pleistocene, the underlying Anguilla Bank likely connected what are now Saint Barthélemy and Saint Martin, making them one island.
