Saverdun
Saverdun is a commune in the Ariège department in southwestern France, in the Occitanie region. It covers about 161 square kilometers and had 4,808 residents in 2023. People from Saverdun are called Saverdunois. The town sits at an elevation between about 209 and 374 meters above sea level. The mayor for 2020–2026 is Philippe Calleja. Saverdun has a train station with connections to Toulouse, Foix and Latour-de-Carol, and it is part of the Portes d'Ariège Pyrénées intercommunal group. The name Saverdun also inspired Verdun, Quebec, now part of Montreal. Historically, in 1242, Count Raymond VII of Toulouse surrendered Saverdun to royal agents Imbert de Beaujeu and Hugh of La Tour-du-Pin during the war of that time.
