Garth Mngomezulu
Garth Piet Mngomezulu (born 20 February 1952) is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2006, representing Mpumalanga. He was elected in 1994 and re-elected in 1999 and 2004, and served as an ANC whip during his third term. He resigned from Parliament on 1 June 2006.
After leaving Parliament, Mngomezulu faced charges in the Travelgate scandal, which involved abuse of MPs’ travel vouchers. In October 2006, he accepted a plea deal and pleaded guilty to fraud in the Cape High Court. The case involved about R235,000 in travel benefits. He was fined R100,000 or five years’ imprisonment, and received a mandatory five-year prison term that was suspended conditionally.
