Ganthet is a Guardian of the Universe in DC Comics. He comes from Oa and is Sayd’s husband. Unlike most Guardians, he is gentler, more empathetic, and cares about people as well as the Green Lantern Corps.

He first appears in Green Lantern: Ganthet’s Tale (1992), a story by Larry Niven and John Byrne. In this tale, Hal Jordan meets Ganthet as he and Jordan face the renegade Guardian Dawlakispokpok, nicknamed Dawly, who is trying to use time travel to change history. Ganthet shields Jordan’s mind and reveals one of the Guardians’ biggest secrets.

After the destruction of Coast City and Hal Jordan’s breakdown, Ganthet becomes the last surviving Guardian. He creates a new Green Lantern ring for Hal’s successor, Kyle Rayner, and hands it to him with the warning, “You shall have to do.” At first, Ganthet is wary of Kyle, but he grows to respect him after Kyle faces Parallax without a ring.

When Kyle becomes Ion, he is more powerful than Hal ever was as Parallax. To prevent the Guardians from losing their humanity again, Kyle goes to Oa to recharge the Central Power Battery and, in the process, helps create a new generation of Guardians who appear as small children. Ganthet agrees to mentor them, hoping they will be better guardians.

In the Sinestro Corps War, Ganthet and Sayd are banished from the Guardians for embracing emotions and for forming the Blue Lantern Corps, a group powered by hope, with Saint Walker and Brother Warth among its first members.

After the War of the Green Lanterns, the Guardians force Ganthet to surrender his emotions so he can rejoin their ranks. Later conflicts with Kyle lead to a perception of Ganthet having his mind altered, though he argues his thinking remains intact.

When Volthoom, the First Lantern, is freed, he imprisons the Guardians on Maltus and restores their emotions. Ganthet feels remorse for his actions and for his battles with Kyle.

The Guardians are freed from Maltus after Volthoom is destroyed, but Sinestro kills many of them. Sinestro spares Ganthet and Sayd, however, and exiles them from Oa.

In the crossover Star Trek/Green Lantern, Nekron kills Ganthet and many others. Nekron destroys the other Corps as well, and Ganthet’s final act is to transport himself and the last power rings into the Star Trek universe before dying.

Ganthet remains a key figure in the Green Lantern mythos, known for his capacity for mercy, his unusual bond with Sayd, and his ongoing influence on the guardians and the various Lantern Corps.
