Gabriel Zahiu
Gabriel Zahiu (17 November 1956 – 20 November 2023) was a Romanian footballer who played mainly as a midfielder, and also as a central defender. He was born in Buzău, Romania, and began his professional career with Gloria Buzău (1973–1975). In 1975 he joined Steaua București, where he helped the team win The Double in his first season and later reach several Cupa României finals; in 1977–78 he scored 12 league goals, making him the team’s second top scorer that season. He also played seven European matches and scored once in European competition. In 1981 he returned to Gloria Buzău, and in 1983–84 he scored 15 league goals to help the club gain promotion to Divizia A. Zahiu made his last Divizia A appearance in 1986. In 1987, he left Romania for Sweden, briefly playing for Örebro before retiring. Over his career he accumulated 254 league appearances and 64 goals. Zahiu died on 20 November 2023 in Helsingborg, Sweden, at the age of 67.
