Autonomous University of Chile
The Universidad Autónoma de Chile (UAutónoma) is a private university in Chile. It has campuses in Temuco, Talca, and Santiago (Providencia and Llano Subercaseaux).
The university is part of the SUA system (Single Admission System of Rector's Council of Chilean Universities) and is accredited by CNA-Chile for a four-year term (2019–2023). It is known for being one of the better institutions in Chile according to various rankings.
History and identity: UAutónoma was founded on August 11, 1989 in Temuco as Universidad Autónoma del Sur and changed its name to Universidad Autónoma de Chile in 2006. It has full autonomy to grant degrees. The university has worked to align its degree programs with Spanish universities such as the University of Barcelona, the University of Salamanca, and the University of Seville.
Campus development: In 2003, the Talca campus opened, and the Llano Subercaceaux campus began in San Miguel. The Providencia campus opened in 2009. In 2010, the university bought INCACEA’s Institute of Sciences and Arts to expand with campuses in Las Condes and Viña del Mar, though the Viña del Mar campus closed in 2012 after accreditation issues.
Programs and quality: UAutónoma offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including diplomas, master’s and doctoral studies. About 88.5% of its degrees are accredited, and around 90.4% of students study in programs with quality certification (as of 2016).
Rankings: It ranks among the top universities in Chile (23rd in CSIC’s 2017 webometric rankings; 61st in Latin America in Times Higher Education’s Latin American ranking). In 2020, it was within Chile’s top 14 according to the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR), 19th nationally and 747th internationally.
