Franz Schmid (January 17, 1905 – September 18, 1992) was a German mountaineer and police inspector. On August 1, 1931, he and his brother Toni became the first climbers to reach the northern wall of the Matterhorn. For this achievement, they won a gold medal for alpinism at the 1932 Olympic Games (Toni received the medal posthumously). In 1932 Schmid also climbed the north face of the Ortler with Hans Ertl. Over his life he climbed about 2,000 summits. The Matterhorn route called the “Schmid route” is named after the brothers.
