James Walter Gozzard
James Walter Gozzard (1861–1926), also known as JW Gozzard, was a British genre and figure painter. He was best known for his charming watercolors and oils of English countryside and village life, and he also painted Italian scenes such as Evening Mists, Venice. His work often captures tranquil, everyday moments with careful detail, and many paintings were made to be sold as prints, helping him to work as a full-time artist.
Gozzard worked with Raphael Tuck & Sons, a well-known publisher of pictures, greeting cards, and postcards. Their cards carried the phrase “Art publishers to their Majesties The King and Queen.” The company prospered during the late 1890s and early 1900s postcard boom, but its headquarters were destroyed in the Blitz, and the business never fully recovered; it later merged with other firms and lasted until 1991.
His artwork has been auctioned by major houses such as Christie’s, Sotheby’s, and Bonhams. Some pieces are housed in the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, and others are held by private collectors around the world.
