Anna Maria of Hungary
Anna Maria of Hungary (1204–1237) was the Empress consort of Bulgaria from 1221 to 1237. She was born in Esztergom, Hungary, the daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary and Gertrude of Merania. She was the sister of Béla IV of Hungary and Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, and her grandmother came from the Agnes of Antioch line of the House of Châtillon.
In January 1221, Anna Maria married Tsar Ivan Asen II of Bulgaria as his second wife. The marriage helped secure her father’s release, who had been held in Bulgaria after returning from the Crusades. Her dowry included the cities of Beograd (Belgrade) and Braničevo.
Anna Maria and Ivan Asen II had several children: Elena, who married Theodore II Doukas Laskaris of Nicaea; Thamar; Kaliman Asen I, who would become emperor of Bulgaria from 1241 to 1246; and Peter, who died in 1237.
Anna Maria died of the plague in 1237 and was buried at the Saints Forty Martyrs Church in Tarnovo, Bulgaria. She belonged to the Árpád dynasty.
