Fourth Symposium on Tibet Work

Beijing hosted the Fourth Symposium on Tibet Work from June 25 to 27, 2001, organized by the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party and the State Council. The meeting aimed to sum up what had been achieved since the Third Symposium, assess Tibet’s current situation and challenges at the start of the new century, and discuss key issues for future work to promote faster development and lasting peace in the region.

CCP General Secretary Jiang Zemin reviewed the achievements and lessons from Tibet’s work since the Third Symposium, looked at the current problems, and outlined guiding principles and main goals for future efforts. Premier Zhu Rongji and Li Peng, chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, discussed how to implement policies in Tibet.
