1967 Koynanagar earthquake
The 1967 Koynanagar earthquake occurred near Koynanagar town in Maharashtra, India, on December 11, 1967, at 4:21 am local time. It had a magnitude of 6.6 and a shallow depth of about 15 km. The strongest shaking reached VIII on the Mercalli scale (Severe). The quake killed about 177–180 people and injured around 2,272. More than 80% of homes in Koynanagar township were damaged. The nearby Koyna dam did not suffer major damage, only some cracks that were quickly repaired. A ground fissure 10–15 cm wide opened and stretched about 25 kilometers. The total damage was around $400,000. Since 1967, several smaller earthquakes have occurred in the area. Some geologists believe the quake was linked to reservoir-induced seismic activity from the dam, but officials have denied this connection.
