Fort Sherman was a U.S. Army post near Coeur d’Alene in northern Idaho. It began in 1878 as a camp on the north shore of Lake Coeur d’Alene and the east bank of the Spokane River, later becoming Fort Coeur d’Alene in 1879. General William T. Sherman recommended the site after his 1877 inspection. In 1887, the fort was renamed Fort Sherman after the general, who visited the post. The fort was abandoned following the Spanish–American War in 1898. Today the site is the campus of North Idaho College. A separate Fort Sherman later operated in the Panama Canal Zone from 1911 to 1999.
