“Rose of Sharon” is a sacred choral anthem by William Billings. It first appeared in 1778 in The Singing Master’s Assistant as An Anthem, Solomons Songs, Chap. 2. It later appeared in several early American tunebooks, including The Southern Harmony and The Sacred Harp. Today it remains popular with early-music groups, and AllMusic calls it one of Billings’s best-loved works. The text comes from the Song of Solomon in the Bible, and uses the famous images “I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys,” along with other love and springtime imagery about the beloved.
