Flower of Life (manga)
Flower of Life is a four-volume slice-of-life comedy manga by Fumi Yoshinaga about high school life. It follows Harutaro Hanazono, a cheerful boy who starts at a new school a month late after recovering from leukemia. He befriends Shota Mikuni, who is friends with Kai Majima, an otaku he initially finds annoying. The story centers on their everyday school life, friendships, and budding romance.
The manga was serialized in Shinshokan’s Wings from April 2004 to March 2007 and collected into four volumes. Digital Manga Publishing released all four volumes in North America between 2007 and 2009. Critics note a mix of humor and character-driven moments, with some early volumes praised for their diverse cast and later volumes for their depth.
Flower of Life received several award nominations, including the 2008 Manga Taishō, the Young Adult Library Services Association’s 2008 Great Graphic Novels for Teens list, and an Eisner Award nomination. The fourth volume also ranked on the Tohan charts in 2007.
