Flattop Peak

Flattop Peak is a 3,063-metre (10,049-foot) mountain in British Columbia, Canada. It sits in The Bugaboos, at the southern edge of Bugaboo Provincial Park, in the Purcell Mountains. The peak rises steeply above its surroundings, about 1,660 metres (5,446 feet) above East Creek within 3 kilometres. The nearest higher peak is Howser Peak, roughly 1.2 kilometres to the southeast. Flattop Peak was first climbed on August 10, 1930, by Eaton Cromwell and Peter Kaufmann, and Cromwell named it; the name was officially adopted in 1960. The mountain is made of granodiorite and is about 135 million years old. The climate is subarctic, with cold winters; temperatures can drop below −20°C, with wind chills below −30°C. There are glaciers on the slopes—the Bugaboo Glacier on the east slope and an unnamed glacier on the south slope. Runoff from the peak drains east into Bugaboo Creek, a tributary of the Columbia River, and west into the Duncan River via East Creek.
