Battle of Tinzaouaten (2012)
Battle of Tinzaouaten (2012) - Short version
On 7–8 February 2012, fighting erupted in Tinzaouaten, a town in northern Mali near the Algeria border. Rebels from the MNLA attacked a Malian Army outpost. After initial resistance on February 7, the Malian army was unable to hold Tinzaouaten, and the town fell to MNLA fighters on February 8. The Malian garrison withdrew to Algeria, which the government described as a strategic retreat.
Casualties and captures: The Malian side reported one soldier killed, ten captured, and 37 soldiers defecting to the MNLA (these defectors were later retrieved by Algerian authorities). The MNLA claimed to have seized two military camps and several vehicles; reports about its own casualties varied.
Aftermath: On February 20, Ansar Dine claimed control of Tinzaouaten. Reports about losses and fighting differed: some sources said many Malian soldiers fled to Algeria, others said there was little or no fighting and no deaths. Reuters cited a Malian government statement saying one soldier was killed and two wounded on February 8.
