Firebase (U.S.-Afghanistan War)
Firebases in the U.S.-Afghanistan War were small, temporary military bases built near fighting areas to support troops. They protected important routes and positions and provided fire support from artillery or missiles. They also stored weapons, fuel, and supplies for the units stationed there. A firebase was usually run by infantry and artillery teams and defended with barriers, towers, and other fortifications. Because firebases sit close to combat, they often faced attacks such as rockets, mortars, and improvised explosive devices. Some bases were moved or closed as situations changed. The term can refer to any base used to deliver fire support, and such bases are similar to forward operating bases (FOBs).
