Findon, Aberdeenshire
Findon is a fishing village eight miles south of Aberdeen. It is famous for Finnan haddie, a smoked haddock that originated there.
Findon Moor has many paths, some along the cliffs, and deer are often seen. Nearby is Portlethen Moss Nature Reserve. Local historic buildings include Elsick House, Gillybrands, and Muchalls Castle.
Findon sits on the North Sea coast in the historic area of Kincardineshire. South of the village is the small offshore island of May Craig. The area was once connected by the Causey Mounth, a medieval trackway built on high ground to link coastal points from Stonehaven to Aberdeen via Portlethen Moss and Muchalls Castle.
This ancient route was used in 1639 by Covenanters led by William Keith, the 7th Earl Marischal, and the Marquess of Montrose in a Civil War battle with about 9,000 men.
